Gov. Douglas’s confidence in the Public Service Board to make the right decision is the best evidence that relicensing approval is a done deal as far as his administration is concerned. Over and over again, the VPSB has made decisions based on false information from Entergy and the Public Advocate for the Department of Public Service. When these lies have been revealed, the VPSB has not used its authority to revoke the Certificate of Public Good, without which Entergy cannot operate. Here are some examples. 1) Entergy’s VP Thayer and Sarah Hofmann, Public Advocate, lied about Entergy’s willingness and ability to stay within the states 20 mrem gamma radiation limit, measured as 1 rad = 1 rem, after Uprate, or they would DERATE (reduce power to stay within the limit). Since 2004 ENVY has exceeded this limit. No consequences, other than the VT DOH changing the radiation rules to suit Entergy. 2) VPSB granted a CPG on Entergy’s request to use dry casks to store excess radioactive waste from extra fuel rods used up faster since the Uprate. The PSB granted a CPG as long as Entergy monitored the casks and reported monthly to DPS and VDH. For an entire year Entergy failed to monitor. No consequences, no enforcement. The VPSB is a tool of the Administration. Let the people decide. Shut VY now, for our children’s health and safety.

VTD requires that all commenters identify themselves by first and last name. You may wonder why we don’t accept anonymous comments. The short answer is: We want to keep the discourse civil.

You might rightly ask, since most online newspapers accept anonymous posts from readers, what makes VTD so special?

The long answer is: Anonymous comments don’t support our mission. We are a nonprofit news organization dedicated to enhancing democracy through in-depth journalism. Our role is to foster a civil online discourse, and one very simple and effective way to do that is to require commenters to identify themselves. This isn’t a new idea, of course. This is the way newspapers have treated letters to the editor since time immemorial.

As a result of our comment policy, VTD has created a safe zone for readers who want to engage in a thoughtful discussion on a range of subjects. We hope you join the conversation.
