When some of our friends at the Gay and Lesbian Fund of Vermont let us know that they were interested in supporting a Challenge Grant this week, we were thrilled. We are thrilled to have their support and thrilled to be able to highlight some of the ways that VTDigger works to share Vermonters’ stories that are often untold.
Kevin O’Connor wrote one such story earlier this fall when he highlighted the work of Vermonter, lesbian and cartoonist Alison Bechdel, and the Vermont premiere of the Tony-Award winning Broadway musical based on her memoir, “Fun Home.”
Now, thanks to Broadway and the New York Times bestseller list, Alison Bechdel has become relatively famous in Vermont despite her previously underground lesbian cartoonist status.
But Digger also works to make sure that we are telling the stories of other marginalized communities as well. Migrant farmworkers, students of color facing discrimination, queer youth breaking boundaries, and low-income neighborhoods fighting corporate polluters have all been covered on VTDigger in the last year.
