MONTPELIER — Vermont House Speaker Jill Krowinski is not running for reelection, she told her colleagues on Thursday.

The Burlington Democrat’s decision was not expected and will come as a surprise to many in state politics. Her staff earlier this year had said that she intended to seek office again.

It also means that both the House and Senate will have new leadership next year. Senate President Pro Tempore Phil Baruth, D/P-Chittenden Central, has said previously that he is leaving his seat after this legislative session ends.

Krowinski was first elected in 2012. Before serving as speaker, she served as House majority leader.
