Two men suffered unidentified “wounds” after a Rutland police officer fired his gun in a confrontation with them near the Giorgetti Athletic Complex on Monday night, according to Vermont State Police.
One officer also “sustained a minor injury during the encounter,” police wrote in a press release.
The episode unfolded around 8:30 p.m. on Oak Street Extension in Rutland, where an unidentified number of officers “encountered a vehicle occupied by two men, and at least one officer subsequently fired his department-issued handgun,” state police wrote in a press release. “The car then was driven toward the end of Oak Street Extension, where it crashed.”
The driver and passenger were taken by ambulance to Rutland Regional Medical Center and then transferred to the University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington, police wrote. The “exact nature and extent of their wounds” was unknown early Tuesday morning.
State police are investigating. They have not yet identified the men nor the officers who are involved.
