Rights & Democracy is a member-led grassroots organization committed to building healthy, just communities and making the values of our communities guide the policies of our government. We are working to win changes that improve the lives of Vermont’s working families and communities most harmed by the status quo. These include S.5, the Affordable Heat Act.
S.5 requires fossil fuel importers to invest in and offer clean, affordable, and price-stable heating options for all Vermonters. Since last year, advocates, legislators and everyday Vermonters have worked hard to ensure that the current bill prioritizes low- and moderate-income households, including renters, and measures that permanently reduce our heating costs and energy use, like weatherization and heat pumps. Vermont’s heating sector is among our biggest sources of climate pollution; it’s past time to end our reliance on fossil fuels and cut costs for working families.
A recent letter to the editor mischaracterized Rights & Democracy as an organization that has given up on our democracy. While we recognize that our current government does not adequately serve, protect, or include all of us, we believe that it can do all of these things. We are fighting hard to make this a reality and win a democracy that works for everyone.
Policies like S.5 that support working families, move away from harmful systems, and protect future generations advance this vision. Join us in calling for the strongest, most equitable version of S.5 and a just transition to a clean energy future that leaves no one behind.
