An incarcerated person at the St. Albans prison is in critical condition following an assault Thursday afternoon by another person in custody at the same facility, according to the state Department of Corrections.
The victim of the assault, who the corrections department did not identify, was transferred from the Northwest State Correctional Facility to the University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington, the department stated in a news release Thursday evening.
Isaac Dayno, a spokesperson for the department, referred questions Friday about the case to the Vermont State Police, who are investigating. Adam Silverman, a spokesperson for the state police, could not be reached early Friday afternoon for comment.
According to the corrections department, the Vermont Defender’s General’s Office, which oversees the state’s prisoners’ rights office, has also been notified.
Vermont Defender General Matthew Valerio also could not be reached Friday for comment on the assault.
