Peter Duval, a former Underhill Selectboard member running to get his seat back less than five months after he was ousted from the board last fall, lost his race Tuesday.

Bob Stone, who was Duval’s opponent and a current selectboard member, won reelection to the three-year seat with 714 votes to Duval’s 44.

Duval was elected to the board in 2020 as a write-in candidate, but the effort to recall him began within months of that election, centering around town officials’ complaints that Duval had mistreated staff members and was difficult to work with.

In October, residents voted 570-23 to remove him from office. Underhill was the first town in Vermont history to use a recall, WCAX reported at the time.

Duval said last week he was running for selectboard again so voters would have another choice on the ballot besides the incumbent.

On Tuesday, Underhill voters also authorized the town to borrow up to $192,000 for purchasing a dump truck and approved a full-time administrative position that officials said would support town staff.
