Vermont State Police say the death of a Massachusetts man found in a Rutland hotel room over the weekend has been ruled a homicide.

Jonathon Houghton, 35, of Holyoke was identified Monday as the victim following an autopsy at the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office in Burlington. His body was found in a room at the Quality Inn Sunday morning.

The cause of death, according to police, was a gunshot wound to his torso. Police said the death has been determined to be a homicide.

State police and Rutland City Police are jointly investigating Houghton’s death and say no arrests have been made.

“Police believe this was an isolated incident, and there is no current threat to the general public,” according to a state police news release Monday afternoon.

Police said they were called around 3:40 a.m. Sunday for a reported disturbance in a second-floor room in the hotel at 253 South Main St.

Officers at the scene found Houghton’s body in the room, and his death was initially reported by police as suspicious Sunday.

However, following the autopsy Monday police said Houghton’s has been ruled a homicide.

“We had detectives, both Rutland City PD and Vermont State Police, interview quite a few people,” Maj. Dan Trudeau, head of the state police criminal division, said at a press briefing late Sunday afternoon.

He also said investigators had been out “canvassing” and talking to people who might have information about the case, as well as seeking any video that may exist.
