I was disappointed to see what VTDigger chose to run as an article about the upcoming March election in Burlington. The gossipy title was spot-on for the non-news concept: “Ashe ‘not thinking’ about mayoral run, but supporters see him as strong contender.”
Looking for a story where there was none, the reporter reached out to a myriad of individuals, including City Councilor Jack Hanson whose “weariness” seems as confused by the premise of the article as I am. Other touted supporters seem to give an even-handed opinion, and even include people who are presented as intending to run themselves.
Why wasn’t the article focused on some of the lesser-known candidates? Why choose one specific non-candidate and then seek out folks to comment on his non-race? It almost reads like the media is trying to select our mayoral candidates for us with a preference for preserving historical power and a tagline of “this white man isn’t running, but wouldn’t it be great if he did?”
With all of the things going on politically in Burlington, our state, and the country, it was disheartening to see this in consideration, much less published, for what Vermonters should be informed about.
I should note that this is not a commentary on Tim Ashe, who has contributed much to our community, both as a city councilor and as a senator, and whose quotes were gracious. I’m sure he would be a great mayor. But no one’s opinions should be newsworthy until Ashe is considering a run.
