Castleton University in southwestern Vermont has run 800 Covid-19 tests. With 84% of the results in, only one is positive, school officials say.
However, not all Castleton students are following social distancing rules, said Jonathan Spiro, Castleton’s interim president. Spiro told Vermont State College board members Monday that one student was hospitalized and another arrested after a fight at an off-campus party over the weekend.
About 300 students moved into the dorms at Castleton the week of Aug. 17, even though classes are all online. The dorms normally hold up to 1,100 people. The school has another 55 graduate students living in apartments Castleton owns in downtown Rutland, and 24 resort and hospitality management students are housed in a former hotel that the university owns near Killington.
Spiro said the student who tested positive is asymptomatic, but she and her suite-mates are in isolation. The Vermont Department of Health is carrying out contact tracing, Spiro said.
