The Vermont Department of Health reported 51 new cases of coronavirus as of Friday afternoon, bringing the total of Vermont cases to 389. There are no new deaths since yesterday.
Health Commissioner Mark Levine recommended that Vermonters wear cloth facial masks, or coverings, if they need to leave their homes for essential purposes. Some people may have COVID-19 but no symptoms, wearing a face mask may help keep people from spreading the virus, although face coverings are not a substitute for physical distancing and other prevention measures.
The department also noted that it is important for medical-grade masks to be reserved for health care workers and first responders. Levine stressed that the most effective way to slow the virus’ spread is by continuing to practice social distancing, washing hands regularly and avoiding touching your face.
The Agency of Natural Resources provided new guidance on Friday, April 3, for how Vermonters can get outside and enjoy the fresh air safely. They ask that people find outdoor areas within 10 miles of home, only drive to outdoor locations with members of your immediate family and practice social distancing while outside.
