GE Aviation in Rutland has told its employees it will be reducing about 60% of its 1,400 workforce, or roughly 840 workers, for at least four weeks in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The company gave its workers the news in a memo sent Tuesday from Kyle Griffiths, Rutland plant leader, and Sarah Robbins, Rutland human resources leader.

“We know this is difficult news and an unsettling period,” the document obtained by VTDigger.org reads. “We will continue to communicate as we receive updates.”

The memo added, “Please support one another and continue to focus on delivering for our customers during this unprecedented period.”

According to the memo, COVID-19 has had a “dramatic” impact on GE Aviation’s customers and supply chain.

As a result, starting Monday April 6, the company will be implementing a “Temporary Lack of Work” requirement in some of their plants across the United States, including Rutland.

During that period, the memo stated, the company will continue to manufacture military, marine and industrial, and “a limited number of critical parts which are essential for supporting COVID-19.”

The company expects that 60% of the Rutland workforce will be on TLOW during the period, and staff at the plant are working to identify those who will be impacted, starting first by seeking volunteers, the memo stated.

Employees on TLOW will receive “Income Extension Aid” payments based on years of services, according to the memo.

“An employee would apply for unemployment benefits and then receive IEA in addition to unemployment compensation,” the memo stated. “An employee will receive GE-paid benefit coverage during the TLOW period.”

Perry Bradley, a GE spokesperson, issued a statement Tuesday evening.

“Due to the unprecedented impact of COVID-19 on the commercial aviation industry, GE Aviation is implementing a temporary reduction in commercial engine assembly and some component manufacturing operations for up to four weeks,” he wrote.

“We appreciate the commitment of all our employees during this difficult time, and we regret having to take this action,” he added. “We will continue to deliver for our customers and preserve our capability to respond when the industry recovers.”
