[V]ermont State Police have identified the victim in Wednesday’s fatal shooting in St. Johnsbury.

Neftaly Martinez, 37, of Enfield, Connecticut, died from a gunshot wound to the chest, according to a press release issued Friday.

Martinez’ death was ruled a homicide by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, the statement said.

State troopers and St. Johnsbury officers responded to an apartment on Pearl Street at about 9:50 p.m. on Wednesday for a reported shooting. They found a man dead inside.

Witnesses told troopers they saw at least two vehicles flee the area after the shooting. State police provided no description of the vehicles.

Neighbors on Thursday said they had heard multiple gunshots Wednesday night. One had observed two silver cars speeding away from the scene.
