State may cut money for sheriff ‘supervision’ of psychiatric patients

Vermont mental health officials say the state should cut funding for the use of law enforcement to supervise psychiatric patients in hospitals. The use of police and sheriffs in emergency rooms has led to a rash of regulatory issues. But hospital advocates say that change could exacerbate problems for emergency room staff.
