Hallquist celebrates historic victory, trains sights on Scott
Primary election results are in. Christine Hallquist won the Democratic nomination for governor on Tuesday. The former utility executive earned over 40 percent of the vote to beat three other challengers, and made history by becoming the first openly transgender candidate for governor in the country.
Scott wins Republican race, but Stern takes 32 percent of the vote
Hallquist will face incumbent Gov. Phil Scott in the November general election. Scott won the Republican primary with about two-thirds of the vote against Keith Stern, a political newcomer from Springfield who gained the backing of gun rights enthusiasts after Scott passed new gun laws this year.
Sanders and Welch easily win renomination
Vermont’s two members of Congress who were up for re-election held on to their nominations. Bernie Sanders and Peter Welch both scored decisive wins against their primary challengers, making it likely they’ll both hold their seats this fall.
