Statehouse at standstill ahead of budget veto deadline
Gov. Phil Scott repeated that he’s poised to veto a budget bill the Legislature passed in an effort to avert a government shutdown. House Speaker Mitzi Johnson said lawmakers won’t consider further changes to their proposal until Scott takes action on the bill later this week.
Vermont officials fret as Trump feuds with Trudeau
Escalating tensions between President Donald Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau over trade relations could have major impacts for Vermont. The state exported over $1 billion in goods to Canada in 2016. Rep. Peter Welch told us he plans to explore ways Congress can limit the president’s ability to impose tariffs.
Vermont health care coalition protests Title X change
The Trump administration has also proposed withholding federal Title X funding from organizations that provide abortions. Locally, a coalition that includes both hospitals and insurers is protesting that those changes could limit health care access for low-income Vermonters.
