Vermont State Police are investigating the death of a prisoner at Northwest State Correctional Facility.
David Bissonnette, 38, died Nov. 22, according to a news release from police.
Medical staff at Northwest State examined Bissonnette that morning and determined he needed to go to the hospital. He was first treated at Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans but was later transferred to the University of Vermont Medical Center. He died that evening, according to the release.
Bissonnette was being held on $4,000 bail on six charges, including misdemeanor drug possession, providing false information to an officer and grand larceny, according to Corrections Commissioner Lisa Menard.
Based on a preliminary review, Bissonnette appears to have died due to a medical event, police said.
Vermont State Police routinely investigate deaths of inmates in state correctional facilities.
Bissonnette’s death will also be reviewed by the defender general’s office.
