The Federal Election Commission warned Bernie Sanders that his campaign was not in compliance with financial public disclosure requirements Thursday, threatening an audit or other enforcement action if he does not respond adequately.
The warning, penned in a letter to the campaign’s treasurer Susan Jackson, points to four red flags. The FEC says the campaign has fundraising discrepancies in its report, and that some donors appeared to have exceeded the donation cap, set at $2,700 for individuals.
The letter says that Sanders has taken in donations from foreign supporters, as well as unregistered political committees, two other violations of campaign finance law.
The letter includes nearly 90 pages listing Sanders supporters who appear to have given too much to the campaign.
The unregistered committee is called Wanda Grasse for School Board. The FEC says a donation of $65.59 came from the group, which appears to be organized by a school board member in Wisconsin.
The letter, penned by FEC analyst Bradley Matheson, requests a response by March 31, adding “failure to comply with the provisions of the Act may also result in an enforcement action against the committee.”
A Sanders spokesman did not immediately return a call seeking comment.
