BURLINGTON — A Burlington man who has a lengthy criminal history has been charged in connection with a rash of burglaries over the past six months in the area just south of downtown.

William Nelson, 47, appeared voluntarily in Chittenden County Superior Court on Monday after a warrant was issued for his arrest. He pleaded not guilty to burglary and possession of stolen property charges and is being represented by Public Defender Stacie Johnson.

The string of home invasion burglaries occurred between May and September in the area of Pine, King and Maple streets, according to police. Detectives say they were able to connect Nelson to the burglaries through interviews with neighborhood residents and search warrants.

Officers say their investigation could lead to additional charges.

Nelson has 11 felony and 13 misdemeanor convictions, including two assaults. When the alleged burglaries were committed, Nelson was under Department of Corrections supervision for convictions of providing false information to police, possession of stolen property, burglary and four counts of violating an abuse prevention order, according to police.

He was released on the condition that he not leave a residence in Franklin County except to retrieve his belongings from his South Champlain Street apartment. Nelson is due in court Nov. 18.
