McAllister, 63, is accused of sexual assault, prohibited acts and human trafficking, according to a press release from the Vermont Department of Public Safety. The charges stem from an investigation into complaints by detectives from the Northwest Unit for Special Investigations.
The senator and Highgate dairy farmer is being held at the Northwest Regional Correctional Center in St. Albans for lack of $20,000 bail.
The Burlington Free Press broke the story about the arrest. McAllister, a landlord, allegedly either solicited or accepted sex with two female tenants in exchange for overdue rent.
McAllister spent the day at the Statehouse and participated in a debate on education reform that lasted until the evening before he was arrested and sent to jail.
He will be arraigned in Franklin County District Court in St. Albans at 11 a.m. Friday.
McAllister has served two terms in the Vermont Senate.
