Vermont’s unemployment rate held steady in January at 4.1 percent, the state Department of Labor said in a news release.
That was the same level as the revised unemployment figure for December, the release said. Vermont’s 4.1 percent rate compares to a 5.7 percent unemployment average nationwide. Vermont’s overall average unemployment rate for 2014 was also 4.1 percent, 0.3 percent lower than 2013, the department said.
“Calendar year 2014 showed continued economic improvement from the previous year,” Labor Commissioner Annie Noonan said in a statement. “The revised 2014 jobs numbers, which capture employment opportunities with Vermont employers, are stronger than initially reported. The increasing number of economic opportunities in Vermont and nationally will provide the fuel to keep the economy growing.”
The unemployment rate in January was lowest in the Burlington area (3.5 percent) and highest in the Derby area (8.2 percent, up nearly 1.9 percent over December). Those figures are not seasonally adjusted.
