The Vermont Workers’ Center and Rising Tide Vermont are planning to draw hundreds of pro single payer and anti gas pipeline activists to the Vermont Statehouse today.

The Workers’ Center recently held a civil disobedience training in anticipation of the event. In a Facebook post, the center told supporters that they are ready for a day of action “to send a clear message that we’re organized and we fight to win.”

Activists plan to hold elected officials accountable and “show them that accountability means to lead by obeying the will of the people.”

The day of action begins with a speakout from 10 a.m. to noon at the Christ Episcopal Church, 64 State St. in Montpelier, solidarity with the homelessness awareness day vigil on the Statehouse steps and winds up with a Statehouse rally at 1 p.m., just before the governor’s inaugural address.

On Dec. 18, the Workers’ Center held a parade in Montpelier and a demonstration in the Statehouse after Gov. Peter Shumlin announced he was abandoning the single payer financing plan.

Activists said his political career was “toast” and delivered a plate of burnt bread to the governor’s ceremonial office.

Last fall, Rising Tide activists held a sit-in on the fifth floor of the Pavilion building where the governor’s office is located.
