Vermont’s top federal prosecutor announced Friday that he will step down next month.
U.S. Attorney Tristram Coffin submitted a resignation letter to the Obama administration and will step down Jan. 12. His top deputy, Eugenia Cowles, will become acting U.S. attorney. Cowles will be the first woman to serve as U.S. attorney in Vermont.
Coffin, appointed in 2009, said in a statement that serving as U.S. attorney was the “highest honor of my professional career to serve the people of Vermont and the United States seeking justice under the leadership of Attorney General Holder and President Obama.”
President Barack Obama and Sen Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., will begin the process to identify and appoint a U.S. attorney in the near future, according to the statement from Coffin’s office.
After stepping down, Coffin will join a private law practice.
