The Energy Co-op of Vermont announced on Wednesday it is leasing cold climate heat pumps to its customers. The northwestern Vermont heating fuel provider says it will install a heat pump for $40 a month on a ten-year lease with an upfront payment of less than $300.

“Our core mission at the Energy Co-op is to help Vermonters make their homes comfortable, healthy and energy-efficient,” general manager John Quinney said in a statement. ”The Co-op Heat Pump lease program does just that by providing immediate cost savings while reducing fossil fuel use by up to 80 percent. It’s a win-win.”

Heat pumps are typically used as a secondary heating source, but can be used to heat certain homes. Experts say heat pumps can warm homes in temperatures as low as minus 18 degrees Fahrenheit, generating average savings similar to those of natural gas compared to heating fuels like oil or propane.

The co-op provides the heat pump and the installation. The application can be found on its website.
