  1. If HVDC lines can be run underwater the length of Lake Champlain and down the Hudson to New York City, then they can also be run underground.

They could follow the land the way highways do, such as Routes 91 and 89, instead of through benign-sounding “corridors” created by cutting highly visible, environmentally damaging, 200-foot wide swaths through virgin forests.

This will involve some blasting and digging, but it would be far less visible than such lines on thousands of highly-visible, steel structures that are 80 to 135 feet tall arranged in straight lines in “corridors” over the landscape.

Because Canadian power companies are in a hurry to bring power to southern New England and because opposition to above-ground HVDC lines would be fierce, the quickest, least-hassle way would be underground.

Most of the extra capital outlays, mostly by the Canadians, would be recovered by them through the earlier sales of electricity.

  2. I did not see anything new in this story.

  3. I am truly amazed at the human spirit to find a way to overcome obstacles in an intelligent, nonviolent manner. It is truly a blessing to have such good neighbors.

  4. Alex,
These good neighbors are selling power to us at a higher prices than they could sell it for in Quebec.

VTD requires that all commenters identify themselves by first and last name. You may wonder why we don't accept anonymous comments. The short answer is: We want to keep the discourse civil.

You might rightly ask, since most online newspapers accept anonymous posts from readers, what makes VTD so special?

The long answer is: Anonymous comments don't support our mission. We are a nonprofit news organization dedicated to enhancing democracy through in-depth journalism. Our role is to foster a civil online discourse, and one very simple and effective way to do that is to require commenters to identify themselves. This isn't a new idea, of course. This is the way newspapers have treated letters to the editor since time immemorial.

As a result of our comment policy, VTD has created a safe zone for readers who want to engage in a thoughtful discussion on a range of subjects. We hope you join the conversation.
