  1. Again, thanks for the detail.

  2. Thank you. This provides a valuable insight into the support
    behind the candidates.

  3. There must be a way to take the money out of political campaigning so that the candidates do not have to waste so much time fund raising and then, of course, be beholden to the donors rather than to the broader swath of the population that cannot afford to pony up cash to support candidates. Great detail, though. Am sure that this is not even the half of it.

  4. Way to “hit the stacks!”
    Very, very well done!
    Thanks to you all…

  5. We cannot have a vibrant and growing private sector jobs creating economy unless the progressives and the Democrats get out of the way. Business obviously is putting its money on Brian Dubie as the candidate best able to grow Vermont out of the downward financial spiral we find ourselves in. Mainly businesses most dependent on government handouts (our tax dollars)seem to be the biggest contributors to the Progs and Dems. These are the Green and probably never viably profitable for the long term idealists or realists who know how to get rich on the tax payers mistaken idealism.

  6. I wish there was public financing of elections and that would be so much better. The two candidates for governor that I have recently given to were Anthony Pollina (2008) and Peter Shumlin (2010). In each case, I felt that they were clearly the superior candidate in the race in terms of their commitment to fundamental change instead of bandaid solutions. The year, it is clear that Peter Shumlin is completely committed to single payer health care, and he has a track record of fighting for and winning issues that he is committed to (freedom to marry, closing Vermont Yankee, etc.).

So, until we have public financing, I’ll give only to candidates that represent something beyond the status quo. But, that doesn’t mean we don’t need campaign finance reform!

VTD requires that all commenters identify themselves by first and last name. You may wonder why we don't accept anonymous comments. The short answer is: We want to keep the discourse civil.

You might rightly ask, since most online newspapers accept anonymous posts from readers, what makes VTD so special?

The long answer is: Anonymous comments don't support our mission. We are a nonprofit news organization dedicated to enhancing democracy through in-depth journalism. Our role is to foster a civil online discourse, and one very simple and effective way to do that is to require commenters to identify themselves. This isn't a new idea, of course. This is the way newspapers have treated letters to the editor since time immemorial.

As a result of our comment policy, VTD has created a safe zone for readers who want to engage in a thoughtful discussion on a range of subjects. We hope you join the conversation.
