The University of Vermont announced Wednesday that masks will no longer be required in its buildings starting Saturday, March 19.
University leaders said in a press release their decision was guided by declining hospitalization rates in the region and the university’s 100% vaccination rate for students and staff.
“All the information we have reviewed supports our transition to a mask-optional campus,” said Gary Derr, the school’s vice president for operations and public safety in the release. “As we have throughout the pandemic, we will continue to monitor the situation and if warranted make appropriate changes.”
Masks are still required in health care settings and on transportation services, according to the university press release announcing the decision.
UVM will still offer Covid-19 testing for students and employees and provide masks for those who want to wear them, officials said. According to the school’s updated guidelines, anyone with symptoms of the disease should wear a mask and get tested.
