Lyft, a ride hailing company that competes with Uber, is launching in Vermont.
Lyft announced May 25 that service would be available in Burlington, Montpelier, Middlebury and surrounding areas.
The company allows people to hire themselves out as drivers. Customers use an app on their smartphones to request and pay for a ride.
Lyft wrote in a news release that the company offers “opportunities for those looking to make extra income; increased economic activity for local businesses, cities, and towns; and the expansion of safe, affordable transportation options.”
Lyft is offering new customers a $5 coupon off their first ride with the code LYFTLOVE17. Lyft currently operates in more than 300 communities across the country.
Uber, the company’s competitor, currently serves the Burlington, Waterbury and Killington areas.
