[T]he University of Vermont Health Network on Tuesday announced that Eric Miller, the former U.S. attorney for the state of Vermont, is serving on its legal team.
Miller, 47, resigned as the U.S. attorney in February, shortly after President Donald Trump fired the acting attorney general for challenging Trump’s immigration policies.
Between 1999 and 2015, Miller was a lawyer for the Burlington firm Sheehey, Furlong & Behm. From 2014 to 2015, he also sat on the board of trustees for the health network’s flagship hospital, the UVM Medical Center.
In 2014, Miller represented the UVM Medical Center in a legal dispute with Northeastern Reproductive Medicine, an independent doctors office in Colchester. The two parties differed on whether the hospital was protecting a patient’s privacy or retaliating against the doctors for starting a competing practice.
“Eric is a former UVM Medical Center trustee and someone who really believes strongly in what the network is trying to do,” said Mike Noble, the spokesperson for the UVM Health Network.
Noble said that when Miller was looking for work after serving as U.S. attorney, “we explored the possibility of putting his talent and experience to work here.”
In his new role, Miller will manage legal matters and provide the leadership with legal advice and opinions, the health network said in a news release. He will work in the office of Spencer Knapp, the UVM Health Network’s general counsel.
Noble said he didn’t have Miller’s salary readily available but that the information would be included in the network’s tax returns. Knapp, the general counsel, made $559,000 in base pay in 2014.
Miller is married to Elizabeth Miller, a lawyer who served as commissioner of public service and chief of staff to Gov. Peter Shumlin. She’s now a consultant whose clients include Burlington Town Center owner Don Sinex.
In a news release, Dr. John Brumsted, the chief executive officer of both the UVM Health Network and the UVM Medical Center, said Eric Miller would “add immeasurably to the capabilities of our leadership team.”
“Eric’s unique skills, experience and perspectives will serve the network well as we continue to develop innovative ways to partner with community organizations and focus on the well-being of the people in the region we serve,” Brumsted said.
