Gov.-elect Phil Scott has asked the State Board of Education to start a search for the next secretary of education, according to a news release from the board.

Board Chair Stephan Morse said Tuesday that he had appointed a subcommittee to start the search, which he hopes will be finished by the board’s January meeting.

It is the board’s responsibility to recommend three nominees to the governor for the position, which begins March 1. One of those nominees could be the current secretary, Rebecca Holcombe, who plans to throw her hat into the ring, according to Haley Dover, a spokesperson for the Agency of Education.

Anyone interested in applying can contact Allison Keating at the Agency of Education.

Morse will chair the search subcommittee, whose other members include Sean-Marie Oller, Mark Perrin and Bill Mathis.

Vermont’s top education post was elevated to the Cabinet level in 2013 when the Education Department became an agency. The department and its commissioner had been answerable to the state board; the secretary serves at the will of the governor.
