An anonymous donor has contributed $1 million to the Vermont College of Fine Arts in Montpelier.

The gift, the largest in the college’s history, raises the school’s tally to $2.2 million toward its capital campaign goal of $3.5 million.

The money will be used to create an alumni and faculty center and renovate the college’s Alumni Hall, according to a news release.

The new Louise Crowley Center will be a state-of-the-art complex that provides housing and meeting space, the release said. The center will be named after long-time VCFA writing program director Louise Crowley.

“For many, Louise Crowley is at the heart of the VCFA experience,” President Thomas Greene said. “We are proud that this new space, one that will support our deep sense of community, bears her name.”

Alumni Hall, which houses the college’s gymnasium, will be renovated into “a dynamic, multi-purpose facility that will be needed exhibition and performance space for our students, faculty and visiting artists,” Greene said.
