With great sadness, we announce the passing of Marjorie Suanne Sugar, who died on May 30, 2026, at the age of 83. Margy grew up in the greater Washington, DC area, followed by 30 years in Vermont (Brattleboro, Johnson and Jericho), and finally 25 years in Birmingham, Alabama.
Marjorie was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Samuel J. Sugar and Naomi V. Sugar, and her sister and best friend, Diane Sugar.
She is survived by her children, Joshua R. Diamond (Catharine Diamond) and Seth L. Diamond (Brooke Diamond); her beloved grandchildren, Hannah Diamond, Naomi Diamond, Ari Diamond, and Zachary Diamond; her brother, Dr. Mark Sugar; and many cherished nieces and nephews.
Throughout her life, Marjorie dedicated herself to education and service. She worked as an elementary school teacher, special educator and librarian. She especially loved her time at The Stern Center for Language & Learning in Vermont and teaching English to Russian immigrants in Alabama.
Marjorie had a deep love of reading and painting and shared these passions with her children and grandchildren. She captured the family history in photography, genealogical trees and stories, and wove Yiddish expressions like Mushuganna and Ish Kabibble into her daily life — a tradition carried on by her family. She will be remembered for her lifelong curiosity and wit, her dedication to her grandchildren, and the many lives she touched through her kindness and teaching.
Donations in her memory can be made to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research or The Stern Center for Language & Learning.
May Marjorie rest in peace and may her memory be a blessing to all who knew her.
