The Vermont office of Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., received a letter Wednesday containing an “unidentified substance,” according to a release from the senator. The office followed “standard procedure,” and government authorities eventually identified the substance as a “harmless powder,” according to the release.

Sanders himself “was not in town for this incident,” his press secretary Patrick Barham Queseda said when reached by email.

The Burlington Police Department and Burlington Fire Department could not be reached for comment.
