One man was killed and another man critically injured in a shooting early Monday morning in Waterbury,  according to Vermont State Police, who described both men as victims in the shooting. By late afternoon, investigators said they were still “working to identify a suspect.”

Police did not release the names of those involved in the incident, pending notification of their relatives and further investigation.

“Preliminary investigation by detectives indicates this shooting was an isolated, targeted event,” police said in a press release. “No one is currently in custody.”

Police said they were called around 12:45 a.m. Monday by a person reporting a shooting at a home in Kneeland Flats Trailer Park in Waterbury.

Officers arriving at the scene found the two victims, and the man with critical injuries was taken by ambulance to the University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington for treatment, according to the release.

Police said the investigation was in its “initial phase,” involving detectives and the crime scene processing unit.

The body of the man who was killed was expected to be brought later Monday to the Vermont Chief Medical Examiner’s Office in Burlington for an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death, as well as to confirm the person’s identity, police said in the release.

Maj. Dan Trudeau, head of the state police criminal division, spoke to reporters late Monday afternoon at the law enforcement agency’s headquarters in Waterbury, but provided few new details in the probe.

He said investigators were busy interviewing neighbors and looking for any video from nearby residences that may have captured images related to the shooting.

“There’s not a ton more I can really say,” said Trudeau, reiterating that authorities did not believe the shooting was a random event.

“We’re still working to identify a suspect,” he said. “There were some other people present at the scene where the incident happened so we’re trying to get some information from those folks as well.”

Asked to describe the connection between the two men who were shot, Trudeau replied, “I think they were acquaintances.”

Trudeau then added, “It’s a little unclear to us. One is technically from New Hampshire, but he’s been in Vermont most recently for a short period of time.”

Trudeau said the man who was wounded in the shooting was in stable condition at the hospital as of late Monday afternoon.

Investigators early Monday evening were still at the site of the incident, with the state police crime scene truck parked in front of the residence.
