Vermont State Police have detained a suspect following a “suspicious death” in Enosburgh.
Police late Friday morning announced they had taken Jordan Lawyer, 29, of Enosburgh, into custody after earlier calling for the public’s help in locating him.
Friday afternoon, state police said Lawyer “knew the victims, a man who is deceased and a woman who was hospitalized.” No charges had yet been filed, and the victims have not been named.
Police received a call at about 8:45 a.m. Friday about a disturbance at a home on Route 108, according to a state police press release.
“Responding personnel located one individual deceased outside the home. A second person was taken by ambulance to the hospital for treatment,” police said.
Before Lawyer was detained, police said he had been reported to be driving a black Jeep in Bakersfield. Police later apprehended Lawyer in the same vehicle.
“The Jeep stopped in central Enosburgh after it collided with a vehicle driven by a game warden. Troopers deployed a less-than-lethal impact round to bring Lawyer into custody,” police said Friday afternoon. “He is undergoing evaluation and treatment of injuries at Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans. No other injuries were reported as a result of Friday’s incidents.”
No further details were available as of 3:30 p.m.
Franklin County State’s Attorney Bram Kranichfeld declined to comment on the pending investigation, saying only that his office was in contact with the investigating agencies.
Court records show Lawyer has a history of alleged violent actions.
In 2022, he was charged with aggravated domestic assault after he allegedly attacked his parents and chased them with a baseball bat, according to a police affidavit in that case. He was later found incompetent to stand trial, according to court documents.
In a psychiatric evaluation written by Dr. Jonathan Weker following a different alleged aggravated domestic assault in 2020, Lawyer was described as having “Unspecified schizophrenia spectrum and other psychotic disorder, Alcohol use disorder (and) possible Schizotypal personality disorder.” Lawyer was found not competent in that case as well, according to court records.
This is the second recent suspicious death in Enosburgh in recent months. In July, police arrested Darren Martell for the murder of 82-year-old Roberta Martin in the town.
