Vermont State Police have identified the man killed Monday night in an apparent drug robbery in St. Johnsbury as 47-year-old Matthew Lomasney.

Lomasney, of St. Johnsbury, died as a result of gunshot wounds to his torso and the manner of death has been ruled a homicide by the Vermont Chief Medical Examiner’s Office, which conducted an autopsy Wednesday, according to a state police press release.

Capt. Jeremy Hill of the state police said Tuesday that the investigation stems from an apparent robbery late Monday night over illegal drugs at an apartment house on Summer Street. Hill said a masked man tried to break into an apartment and was shot and killed by a person inside the residence who then fled.

Responding St. Johnsbury police officers found the man’s body inside the residence on stairs in a common hallway leading to an apartment on the upper floor, according to Hill.

By the time police arrived, Hill said, everyone in that upstairs apartment had fled. No arrests have been made in the shooting as of Wednesday, according to police.
