A sunset over a snowy field with a pink sky.
“Sunset During Christmas,” by Ruth Petit, 17, of Rutland

Cecilia Huling, 12, East Thetford

I can’t imagine living someplace else.

Away from the people who’ve known my name since I was born, who’ve never left my side.

Away from the roads I know so well, as if they are the veins across my arms.

Away from the sunsets I will never forget, that keep me going through the morning and night.

Away from the tall mountains and glorious trees that tower over my little Vermont town, protecting me.

Away from my school, friends, family, home — life.

I would never leave here,

my little town filled with everything I live for. It’s just the same as any other town,

but it’s different.

It’s different because I know the people who know me,

I know these roads like no one else does,

I know these sunsets and these trees and my family like no one else does.

That is why I am never leaving.

Never leaving my boring, glorious, little town in the middle of nowhere.

Because I would leave too much behind.
