A day after Norwich University’s board of trustees accepted the resignation of former president Mark Anarumo and alleged that he had violated the school’s “core guiding values,” the board said that one of its trustees is a candidate for the job.
John Broadmeadow, a retired lieutenant general in the U.S. Marine Corps and a Norwich alumnus, joined the board in 2022, according to a statement from the trustees on Wednesday. The board wrote that Broadmeadow, a previous semifinalist for the job, would participate in town hall meetings in the coming days, after which the board would review feedback on his candidacy. A decision could come as soon as late next week.
In an interview last week, Anarumo told VTDigger that he was on paid leave and planned to leave Norwich University as a result of a “mutual” decision he reached with the college. He also stated that his departure had nothing to do with a particular incident or incidents.
But according to preliminary findings from the investigation into Anarumo, the board said this week, “it was clear he violated Norwich’s core guiding values and University policy.” The nature of his alleged infractions remains unclear.
After the board publicly contradicted Anarumo’s claims, the ousted president sent a two-page statement to the media that notably did not mention anything regarding the investigation or alleged policy violations.
“As many of you know, I have spent much of my time as president talking about the need to return grace and civility to our lives and identity. I continue to try and live these values as an example,” Anarumo wrote. “I hope everyone will remember the many times since my arrival in 2020 that I pleaded for our community to set the path for a return to civility and reasonableness.”
