Vermont State Police say one man is dead and another injured following an altercation Christmas Day in the town of Newport.

Authorities received a report of the altercation around 3:15 p.m. Monday on Lawson Road, where responding troopers found a 58-year-old man dead at the scene, according to a press release issued Tuesday by Vermont State Police.
A second man, who is 39 years old, suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the altercation and was transported to a hospital by private vehicle before police arrived at the scene, according to the release.
State police did not immediately identify the name of either man but said they would do so after additional investigation and the notification of relatives.
An initial investigation indicated that this was “an isolated incident contained to this address involving individuals known to each other, and is not believed to be connected to any other cases,” police said in the release. Those connected to the incident have cooperated with the investigation, police said, and no one was in custody as of Tuesday.
The body of the man who died was expected to be brought to the Vermont Chief Medical Examiner’s Office to determine the cause and manner of his death.
Adam Silverman, a state police spokesperson, declined to provide more information about the relationship between the two men or whether any firearms were involved in the altercation.
