Vermont State Police have identified the person whose body was found in Washington this week as a 23-year-old Barre woman.

In a press release, police said they consider the death of Tanairy “Tanya” Velazquez Estrada to be suspicious. An investigation is ongoing.

Estrada’s mother reported her missing to police in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, on Wednesday, after she had not been heard from in more than a week, police wrote.

Estrada had “most recently lived in Barre,” they said. Fitchburg police contacted Vermont authorities “at about the same time the victim’s body was discovered” by hunters in a wooded area along Poor Farm Road in Washington on Wednesday afernoon, they said.

A determination of Estrada’s cause and manner of death is pending, police said.
