The only constant in life is change, they say. And if anything can be grokked about this strange world, it’s that evolution is also inevitable in the self, as this week’s featured poet, Riley Bernatchy of Cambridge, wisely opens: “I am certain that I am forever changing.” Like the moon, like the sea, like the wind.
Forever certain
By Riley Bernatchy, 15, of Cambridge
I am certain that I am forever changing,
like the moon, who has different phases.
I am certain that, like the moon, I am drawn to the sea,
the peaceful sound of the waves creating music on the shore.
I am certain that, like the sea, I listen to the wind,
as it sings a song I’m certain I’ve heard before.
I am certain that, like the wind, I watch the thunderstorms,
as lightning strikes the ground and thunder rolls in.
I am certain that, like the thunderstorms, I love the rain,
as it pours its heart out to the quiet land.
I am certain that, like the rain, I enjoy the land,
as its beauty looks up toward the sky, looking at the forever-changing moon.
