Vermont State Police are searching for a man wanted in connection with a suspicious death that occurred Thursday in Castleton.

Police responded to the Delaware & Hudson Rail Trail near 1587 South St. around 4:30 p.m. after receiving a report of a woman who was found dead, according to a press release issued by state police Thursday night.

Police did not immediately provide more information about the victim.

A witness in the area told troopers that they heard gunshots and then saw a man walking north on the rail trail toward the Vermont State University’s Castleton campus. The witness described the man as white, around 5 feet, 10 inches tall, with short, dark-colored hair, according to police. He was wearing a dark gray T-shirt and carrying a black backpack.

The suspect is considered armed and dangerous, and police urged members of the public to remain vigilant.

The woman’s body will be brought to the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office in Burlington for an autopsy to determine how she died, police said.
