Police identified the 50-year-old man who was killed in a shooting in Danville on Saturday and said the other victim remains hospitalized.

An autopsy showed that Wayne Payton died from a gunshot wound to the head, according to a press release Sunday evening from Vermont State Police.

Police previously indicated that Payton and another man who lived in the same residence on North Danville Road — identified on Sunday as Tellurian Surles, 23 — had shot one another at the home on Saturday afternoon.

Surles was ultimately taken to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire, where he was listed in stable condition.

In response to a question, state police spokesperson Adam Silverman said Surles was in a relationship with another resident of the home.

The investigation is ongoing.
