State police are investigating after a 37-year-old incarcerated man died at the prison in St. Albans.

In a press release late Wednesday night, Vermont State Police said the man, who was not publicly identified, โ€œbecame unresponsive in the shower areaโ€ at the Northwest State Correctional Facility at about 6:35 p.m.

โ€œCorrections staff provided emergency medical care and called first responders to the prison,โ€ police wrote. โ€œLifesaving efforts were unsuccessful, and the inmate was pronounced dead at Northwest State at 7:22 p.m. Wednesday.โ€

Under standard prison protocol, state police were notified and launched an investigation. Based on โ€œpreliminary information,โ€ the death is not considered suspicious, police said.

An autopsy will be conducted.
