State police are investigating after a 37-year-old incarcerated man died at the prison in St. Albans.
In a press release late Wednesday night, Vermont State Police said the man, who was not publicly identified, “became unresponsive in the shower area” at the Northwest State Correctional Facility at about 6:35 p.m.
“Corrections staff provided emergency medical care and called first responders to the prison,” police wrote. “Lifesaving efforts were unsuccessful, and the inmate was pronounced dead at Northwest State at 7:22 p.m. Wednesday.”
Under standard prison protocol, state police were notified and launched an investigation. Based on “preliminary information,” the death is not considered suspicious, police said.
An autopsy will be conducted.
