A 3-year-old boy died over the weekend after suffering life-threatening injuries from falling into a water storage tank at Smugglers’ Notch Resort, according to Vermont State Police.

Tate Holtzman of Cambridge died at The University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington, state police said in a press release.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Burlington determined his cause of death to be drowning and classified the manner of death as an accident, police said.

The incident occurred Thursday as Tate was walking in an area adjacent to an outdoor splash pad at the resort and fell into the below-ground storage tank filled with water. 

Tate was in the water for approximately 10 minutes before on-duty lifeguards were able to free him from the basin, according to the release.  

State police are still investigating the incident.
