Starting this week, more than 10,000 Vermonters can expect settlement checks in their mailboxes.
The Vermont Attorney General’s Office announced Tuesday that some customers who used Turbotax for their federal tax returns between 2016 and 2018 will be mailed checks for either $29 or $30.
Intuit, the company that owns Turbotax, was ordered to pay a $141 million multistate settlement in May of last year because of misleading marketing practices in its IRS Free File program. According to the settlement, marketing information misled customers to pay for tax services even though they qualified for the free program.
“This settlement holds Intuit accountable for their deceptive marketing of free tax services and requires them to be honest and transparent with consumers about their eligibility for free products,” Attorney General Charity Clark said in Tuesday’s announcement.
Eligible recipients don’t need to file claims to receive checks, according to the attorney general’s office. People eligible for the settlement money will be contacted via email and checks will be mailed through the upcoming weeks, starting this week.
