An 85-year-old man from Brattleboro died on Friday while incarcerated at Southern State Correctional Facility in Springfield, according to the Vermont Department of Corrections.

Anthony Giallella was “receiving end-of-life comfort measures at the SSCF infirmary following treatment in a medical facility,” the department said in a press release. A corrections officer “observed signs of medical distress during a routine visual check” at 1:25 p.m., officials wrote, and medical personnel responded. He was pronounced dead 10 minutes later.

The state medical examiner will determine Giallella’s cause of death, which is not considered suspicious, according to the department.

Giallella was serving a sentence of six to 20 years for lewd and lascivious conduct with a child, it said.

Giallella is the 11th person lodged at the Springfield facility to have died since January 2022, according to authorities.

Correction: An earlier version of this story misstated the time of day when Giallella was in medical distress.
