Responding to a report that an individual “may have been shot,” St. Johnsbury police found a person dead at a Hastings Street home early Wednesday, according to a press release from the Vermont State Police, which is investigating the death.

The discovery drew investigators from the state police Major Crime Unit, a crime scene search team and a victim services unit.

State police initially stopped short of labeling the death a homicide, instead calling it a “suspicious death.” But in an update Wednesday evening, state police spokesperson Adam Silverman said police were investigating it as a homicide.

State police said the call came into the local police department at 9:45 a.m, requesting a welfare check at the residence. Authorities have not released any information about the victim.

The victim’s body will be taken to the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office in Burlington for an autopsy to determine the cause of death, according to the state police.
