After feeling unwell at his Virginia home late Thursday, Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., was taken to a hospital in the Washington, D.C., area, according to a press release issued by his office.

Leahy underwent precautionary tests and, at the recommendation of his doctors, planned to spend the night for observation, his office said. The release provided no additional information about his condition.

The 82-year-old senator, who plans to retire in January after nearly half a century in office, has been hospitalized at least twice before in recent years — in January 2021 after presiding over former President Donald Trump’s impeachment trial and this June after breaking a hip.

Leahy returned to Vermont earlier this month for the first time since his hip surgery and took part in a series of events focused on his legacy in the Senate. He was scheduled to return this weekend and take part in a press conference Monday at GlobalFoundries’ Essex Junction plant.
