Police are investigating a Tuesday night shooting at the Maplefields store in St. Johnsbury that critically injured one person.
The victim, Nathan Smires of Barnet, sustained a life-threatening injury and was initially taken to Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital for treatment, according to a Vermont State Police press release. He was later transferred to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in New Hampshire.
The shooting took place outside of the store and involved people who knew each other, according to Adam Silverman, a spokesperson for the Vermont State Police.
After executing a search warrant Wednesday afternoon at 1241 Mathewson Hill Rd. in Lyndon, two individuals from the residence were detained as people of interest in connection to the shooting, according to state police.
Detectives remained at the site of the house late on Wednesday and were interviewing four others in the home, police said. The detectives will conduct the court-ordered search at the house for additional evidence.
A preliminary investigation suggests the shooting was an “isolated incident,” police said.
The shooting at the store on Route 2 was reported to the St. Johnsbury Police Department shortly before 10:30 p.m. Vermont State Police is leading the investigation.
